Residents of a block of flats in Croydon were shocked to find a makeshift living room had been set up in the stairwell of their building after two 'homeless' men moved in by setting up a corner sofa as well as a table and chair.

Posting a video on TikTok after discovering the setup, user TripletChris, from Croydon, wrote "only in Thornton Heath" as he looked over the furniture that had appeared in the stairwell, its owners apparently absent from the makeshift living room.

In the video a slatted wooden chair with a connecting side table could be seen fitted perfectly into the space between two flights of stairs alongside an old corner sofa made of black fabric, the ingenious setup protected from the elements by the concrete stairs above.

Initially shocked after discovering the arrangement, the TikToker leaves the block saying "sorry for intruding" before later returning and meeting the two men behind it, who appear to be homeless.

After getting their names and moving past his initial shock he chats with them and offers to buy them something to drink as well as bringing down some food for them both. Those watching the video were glad to see the friendly exchange with one writing: "Can't lie I rate people who help the homeless in any way."

Another added: "I have to respect it."
